Bright Ideas

These delightful Lighted Potpourri Warmers are a great way to recycle our 26 ounce soy candle containers. Just add mini-lights, your favorite potpourri, a doily and a bit of ribbon! They are extremely easy to make. In about 15 minutes you have great gift. Then make one for yourself!

Supplies needed:
Supplies:

• 26 ounce candle container, empty, washed and dried

• 6 to 8 inch doily (handmade or from a dollar store)or other open woven fabric

• 1 strand of 20 or 25 light low voltage miniature Christmas lights

• Small bag of potpourri, any fragrance

• 26 to 28 inches of ½ inch wide ribbon, preferably wired edged

• Rubber band or ponytail holders

Add Lights and Potpourri
Arrange the lights and potpourri

Plug in the lights to make sure they all work, tightening bulbs if needed. Make sure the container is clean and dry. With the lights plugged in, put the first four light bulbs in the bottom of the jar. Cover with a thin layer of potpourri. Repeat the layer of lights and potpourri using the handle of a wooden spoon if needed to adjust the lights so that they are not bunched up or completely hidden by the potpourri. Continue to arrange the lights and potpourri until you get the look that you like.

Secure the Doily with a rubber band or ponytail holder

Allow the light cord to hang over the rim of the jar and center the doily over the opening. Secure the doily with the rubber band or ponytail holder.

Tie the ribbon around the neck of the jar and finish with a bow.

Variations
You can change the look of the Potpourri Warmer by using different colored lights, ribbon and doily. The center Warmer in the first photo is made with a dollar store dish cloth and red 1/4 inch ribbon for a more country look. You could tie a bow with raffia, heavy string or even leather strip.

When choosing fabric for the top, be sure to use open weave like a crochet or lace doily. If you use fabric, be sure it is VERY open weave like dish cloths from the dollar store. In this case, you want thin ones to allow the fragrance and HEAT to escape. Do not use quilting blocks as the weave is too tight and will not allow heat to dissipate. No matter how pretty the fabric is, it isn't worth setting your house on fire!

Safety Tips
• Do not leave warmer on overnight or unattended. • Place on a heat resistant surface. • Check the container frequently to see if it is getting too warm. I use low voltage mini-lights that do not get very hot. • Change the potpourri when the fragrance is gone. After that, you are just heating up the very dry potpourri.
